Gain tangible medical and surgical skills using comprehensive simulation kits as well as numerous accredited training courses. Through a combination of self-paced instruction, hands-on project work, and interactive tutorials designed by medical professionals, you’ll be immersed in a medical school-caliber experience online.

Hands-On Learning From Home

Our virtual Medicine programs will teach you about a variety of important topics in the medical profession, ranging from ethics to research to diagnoses of diseases, and provide practical projects suitable for self-examination or the examination of a test patient (such as a friend or family member). Each course’s lessons have been compiled by a wide range of practicing medical professionals and field experts using videos, animations, and sound recordings.

You’ll receive access to all online courses for 12 months ($100/year value). You’ll also have access to bi-monthly online academic meetings with Apprentice Doctor ($600/year value). Information about the meetings will be shared within your Apprentice Doctor Account.

Virtual Medicine Courses and Kit Components

Students will receive certificates for over 200 alternative shadowing hours with the following seven (7) kits/courses:

Future Doctors Course/Kit with Pulse Oximeter (equivalent of 60 shadowing hours)

After completing the Future Doctors course, students should have a good understanding of:

  • The basic principles of conducting a medical examination
  • An understanding of how to use several medical instruments and items
  • The basic human anatomy and physiology of the eleven bodily systems
  • The systematic approach in diagnosing diseases
  • An understanding of medical ethics
  • The importance of taking a thorough medical history
  • The meaning of multiple medical terms (medical terminology)
  • Various careers in medicine and healthcare

In addition to this, the student will have the following healthcare/medical skills:

  • Hand Hygiene
  • Normal and abnormal bodily sounds
  • A patient’s vitals
  • Examine various bodily parts
  • Neurological reflexes
  • Urinalysis
  • Pulse Oximetry

The student will have a working understanding of the following topics:

  • The body’s water balance
  • The basic principles of airway management
  • Emergency medicine and trauma
  • Burn injuries
  • Growths (tumors)
  • Several metabolic diseases
  • Many infectious diseases

Suture Course/Kit (equivalent of 25 shadowing hours)

Learning how to suture wounds and lacerations requires a thorough understanding of the theory of wound care and the basic principles of suturing. The course is not intended to substitute the clinical training of students but rather to offer a firm foundation and an opportunity to experience their initial learning curve in an imitation situation –to fill the student with confidence when they are faced with the real-life clinical situation. The student also needs to reach an advanced level of proficiency by practicing knot tying and suturing techniques. The course consists of 5 sections:

  • The Suturing Kit
  • Preparatory Projects
  • Surgical Knot Tying
  • Basic Principles of Wound Care
  • Basic Suturing Techniques

Venipuncture Course/Kit (equivalent of 30 shadowing hours)

This is an illustrated, hands-on, self-paced, online course which includes all the instruments and items needed. A basic understanding of general human (or veterinary) anatomy and physiology, especially the cardiovascular system, is required in order to understand and safely apply the techniques that the student will learn. Every “simple” venipuncture procedure is, in essence, a minor surgical procedure governed by the basic principles of surgery:

  • Have a comprehensive understanding of basic medical sciences, especially anatomy and physiology of the relevant areas and systems.
  • Follow the basic principles of sterility and asepsis, including the use of barrier techniques.
  • Take a medical history and interpret this information to modify your treatment plan.
  • Use good lighting.
  • Respect life and bodily tissues.
  • Perform the procedure in a humane and professional manner.
  • Anticipate the possibility of complications and deal with them promptly and effectively.

Stop the Bleed Course/Kit (equivalent of 25 shadowing hours)

The objectives of this course are to give members of the public (without medical background/training) a good understanding of the different types of bleeding and then enable them to practice and perfect the relevant skills to stop or significantly reduce bleeding. Additionally, the course teaches medical and healthcare professional students the basic principles of bleeding, hemostasis, shock, and how to control and/or stop bleeding in the emergency as well as in a medical environment.

Control Bleeding Course students will gain knowledge and an understanding of:

  • Vascular anatomy
  • Physiology of blood, blood volume, blood pressure, and blood clotting
  • Methods to control bleeding in both the emergency and controlled medical settings
  • Surgical shock
  • Restoring hypovolemia
  • Relevant pharmacology
  • Various other related subjects
  • Methods to stop bleeding in the emergency setting
  • Methods to stop bleeding in the controlled medical environment

Orthopedic Course/Kit (equivalent of 30 shadowing hours)

After completing this course students should have a good understanding of:

  • Principles of asepsis
  • Surgical sterility
  • Basic bone biology and physiology
  • Basic anatomy of the human skeleton
  • Biomechanical considerations in orthopedic surgery
  • Radiological considerations
  • Basic principles and methods of fracture reduction, fixation, and immobilization
  • Simple fracture classifications
  • Healing of the fracture site
  • Common complications

In addition to this, the student will have the following healthcare/medical skills:

  • Preparing a sterile surgical field
  • Identification of common surgical landmarks
  • Sharps safety
  • Surgical retraction
  • Blunt dissection
  • Fracture reduction
  • Fracture fixation
  • Place a bone plate with monocortical screws
  • Place a bone plate with bicortical screws
  • Closing (suturing) a surgical wound
  • Placing a dressing
  • Properly discarding medical waste and sharps

Additional Course/Kits include:

  • Aseptic and Sterility Course/Kit (equivalent of 20 shadowing hours)
  • Behavioral Science Course (equivalent of 30 shadowing hours)

The Apprentice Doctor was founded by Dr. Anton Scheepers, a qualified practicing medical professional with more than 20 years of surgical experience, specializing in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Due to his specialty, Dr. Anton has completed rotations in general surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as ear, nose, and throat surgery.

  • Is Enhanced Skills of Medicine for me?

    This program is for you if you are a high school student interested in exploring the tools and numerous career options available in the field of medicine.

    To join the Enhanced Skills of Medicine, you must be in grades 9–12 during the 2023–2024 school year.

  • Are there any system requirements?

    No. If you have an internet connection, you should be able to access the program from anywhere.

  • How do I receive the kits?

    Kits will be shipped to the address provided during checkout. Kits may take a few weeks to ship.

  • How does Enhanced Skills of Medicine differ from National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF): Medicine or NYLF Advanced Medicine & Health Care programs?

    Enhanced Skills of Medicine is made up of kits and virtual experiences that focus on teaching specific medical techniques through an online platform, which can be completed at any time within one (1) year of a student enrolling. Although some of the materials are the same as those used at NYLF Medicine & Health Care and NYLF Advanced Medicine & Health Care, the activities the students participate in at these programs are not. In fact, some students choose to add Enhanced Skills of Medicine to their enrollment to prepare for their in-person program at home.
